10 Great Ways To Keep Busy While You’re At Home and Not Travelling

I’m certain that you are one of many people reading this post having anchored ship at home. With travel restrictions in place due to covid-19, many people are “stuck” at home. This can be extremely frustrating, especially if you’re used to having a full day scheduled with work, errands and more.

These days video calls are becoming a norm, as humans adapt to their current way of life. But what can you do to help ease the boredom of being home? What if you’re not working remotely or don’t have as much to do to? Yep, then this list might come in handy for you.

While this isn’t my usual travel post, it is relevant for the strange times that we’re living in.

Check out my list of 10 things to do while you’re home

  1. Therapeutic adult colouring books

Now colour in books has long not been only for kids. Yep, you get some pretty cool adult colouring books that are filled with intriguing designs and pictures. It will surely help you to unwind and take a break from whatever is stressing you out during social distancing.

After lockdown, you can check out these bookstores for stock:

  1. Bake with the kids or by yourself

Use this time to explore your inner pastry chef skills. Ingredients are available at grocery stores and you can find an array of self-help, YouTube videos dedicated to mastering the arts of baking.

What’s more is, that with the kids and or your significant other at home you could turn it into a family affair as everyone pitches in. It can be loads of fun and not forgetting you can eat the treats you bake…. yum!

  1. Dust off those puzzles it’s time to get creative

So, puzzles may not be one of the first things you consider when social gathering, but since we’re social distancing, we might as well crack out the puzzles. Yes this can keep you busy for hours especially with more pieces.

The kids can join in and help find the parts or better yet work next to you on their own puzzles. If you can complete your puzzles why not put them in a frame and display on a wall in your home. Talk about signature touches to interior decor.

  1. Break out the board games people

Board games are always exciting and often get louder as the game progresses. From Scrabble and Monopoly, to Trivial Pursuit and 30 Seconds, you and your household can enjoy the excitement in the safety of your home.

  1. Have you read all the books in your library?

Kudos to James Patterson and the late Tom Clancy for their amazing stories – My library and I love ’em☺

Whether you read ebooks or hard covers, reading will help to pass the time, plus give you a creative adventure into a different world. I personally enjoy espionage and mystery novels.

Why not go ahead and read a new book, or get one on the many free listings available online like my ebook under my pseudonym. You could also read with the kids, as this will encourage them to get into the love affair that is books and stories galore!

  1. Tap into your artistic side

You don’t need to be qualified in fine art, animation or graphic design to take joy in your unique skills of sketching or painting. Let your imagination run wild as you paint or draw on canvas or in a sketchbook.

I have always loved and admired art in all forms since I was a kid. Yet I must admit I haven’t had the chance of getting back into the swing of it, but I definitely intend on doing so this year.

If you don’t have paint, don’t stress about it. You can use anything including pencils, pens, colouring pens and charcoal to name a few. I personally like the effects of shading with charcoal.

  1. Take time off to meditate and be still

With life comes many stressful situations and we can easily be swallowed up into the crazy of it all. One of the best ways to get through some difficult days is meditation and being still. The world is filled with noise and sometimes there seems so much negative energy around. Try not to get caught up in all that, but instead sit still and clear your mind.

You could use this with breathing exercises such as alternate nostril breathing. This right here will help to elevate serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain and thus elevate your mood. It is also thus excellent to help cope with stress.

  1. Make time to get some exercise

If you don’t have a routine where exercise is concerned, now’s the ideal time to start working on one. Many people speak of a “morning routine” this is usually at the very beginning of your day before starting anything else.

Some folks would enjoy a strengthening workout session or cardio, and others would do some stretches to get their body active and ready for the day. You can work on yours and by the time you’re back at work, this can become your regular routine.

  1. Work in your garden

While it’s reasonable to say that you cannot look after your garden every day because it takes time for changes to occur, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy yours. Gardens are beautiful and a reminder of creation and nature so pure and so perfect. You could work on a garden project to help pass the time.

This is yet another wonderful one to tackle with the kids. Teach them as you go so that they can do the same one day. Kids are always eager and willing to learn, and this will serve as a good bonding experience too.

  1. Play some video games

Some of my favourite gaming titles ☺

If you’re a self proclaimed gamer then this one is made for you. Why not take the liberty to play your favourite video game titles and level up in your campaign. What’s awesome about certain games is that you can join others in a multiplayer online mode.

Whether you’re into first-person shooter games, or love the adventure and mystery ones, now’s the time to get playing.

What’s the conclusion about things to do when working from home?

Being at home doesn’t have to be a dull affair, but it can definitely take away from an otherwise “jolly” person.

Freelancers or self-employed people are already used to the work-from-home environment. But with social distancing, being able to get out and do fun things is non-existent. It thus also affects freelancers in a negative way.

But with faith and hope we all continue to carry on. This too will come to an end and we will be able to live life wiser while taking extra care of our well-being and being kind to each other.

Stay safe, and peace to all!
